“Max,” Lexi said, her eyes filled with worry. “We can’t keep this from Congresswoman Marsh any longer. She has to know.” Lexi tapped the CD. They had waited a couple of days, hoping to be able to add more context to the threat or at least find out who had sent it, but they’d hit a brick wall. Will’s college buddies had helped piece Will’s uni days together—mostly drunken weekends—but two things they all said was that Jenny had been a permanent fixture on his arm, and that Will brought the party to the party. Meaning, he brought the drugs, and then he suddenly started dealing to feed his own habit. It was an easy sell, as there was no lack of eager partakers. These particular rich college kids had an endless supply of cash and the ever-present need to party like rockstars. Jenny was the X factor in everything. She fit, most certainly, but they just didn’t know how—yet.

Max sighed. “I know, Lexi. I just…I don’t want to be responsible for distracting her from the campaign. She hired me to handle all of these things so she didn’t have to think about them.”

Lexi stepped closer, her hand reaching out to touch Max’s arm. “We’re doing what’s best for both her and Will. This is bigger than the campaign now. It’s about keeping them safe.”

Max hesitated, her gaze lingering on Lexi’s determined face. She knew Lexi was right, but the consequences of their decision bore down on her shoulders like a ton of bricks. They were about to tell Marsh more about her son than she probably wanted to know.

“Alright,” Max agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Let’s arrange the meeting.”
